I love this space because it’s filled with such courageous, thoughtful people—so many of you actively reflecting on your own self-healing journeys. It’s been a reflective time for me too, and lately I’ve been thinking a lot about growth… and how surprising it can be when we actually allow it to unfold.
Because forcing things never really works out, does it?
The Cookbook That Held a Mirror
I don’t know if you’re aware of this, but I’m a big fan of vegan cookbooks. Honestly, if you ever wonder what to gift me, just take me to the cookbook section of a bookstore—I’d beam and say, “You get me.” I love the creativity, the nurturing energy, the promise of trying something new.
My collection began years ago, around the time I emerged from my dark night of the soul. Maybe my soul was cooking up a new life, so my brain attached itself to this new hobby. One book, in particular, was the beginning. The author was this effortlessly cool surfer mom who lived by the water—confident, radiant, and free. I was obsessed.
But here’s the thing: her recipes weren’t exactly simple at the time. They called for $250 grocery trips, hours in the kitchen, and ingredients I didn’t normally keep around. So instead, I found myself flipping through the pages—admiring the nature photos, imagining myself one day living that lifestyle, but not actually cooking from it. Over time, the book naturally fell to the side.
The Moment Everything Clicked
The other day, I randomly picked it up again because I was bored with my go-tos—and something shifted. Suddenly, the recipes felt familiar. The ingredients? Already in my pantry. And the woman I once placed on a pedestal? I realized I’d become her in my own way. I surf. I’m in the water every weekend. I carry my own confidence. And I make recipes like hers all the time.
I didn’t need to force myself to be like her; I just needed to trust that I was already walking my own version of the path.
The Podcast That Echoed the Lesson
That reminder landed again while listening to a podcast later that week. The guest was vulnerably honest, raw, kind, and full of wisdom. I was in awe. My first reaction was, “Wow, I need to be more like her.” And then I caught myself. There it was again—the force. Just like with the cookbook, I realized the real lesson wasn’t to copy her, but to trust myself and take what I needed from her story.
And here’s the full-circle truth: I know there have been times in my life when I did force it—when I tried to shape myself into something else and ended up losing pieces of who I was. Pieces I later had to fight to reclaim. That’s why these reminders matter so much.
Somewhere between a cookbook and a podcast, I remembered: you can trust who you are and what’s to come. You can let it flow and emerge.
Fear vs. Love
It clicked:
👉 Every time I’ve forced, it came from fear.
👉 Every time I’ve flowed, it came from love.
That awareness—learning to notice when we’re pushing versus when we’re allowing—is such a quiet but powerful part of self-healing. It’s how we rebuild trust with ourselves, one gentle choice at a time.
